Why do we say that?

Because there is currently no single product called a "whole-house water purifier."

If you ask this question online, you will definitely get a wide variety of answers. However, a wide range of answers does not mean they are correct.

Some will definitely tell you to install a reverse osmosis (RO) system of a certain brand, arguing that since it’s a famous brand, so it's reliable.

But an RO reverse osmosis system is unable to be used as a whole-house water purification solution.

Let’s not even mention the low flow rate of RO systems first.

Even if the flow rate were sufficiently high, consider this: even when an RO membrane is operating at its maximum filtration capacity, still producing 1 cup of purified water typically wastes at least 1 cup of wastewater.

Now, suppose a household uses 1~2 tons of water per day under normal circumstances.

If you use an RO reverse osmosis system for whole-house water purification, you would waste at least 1~2tons of water every day.

Can you afford that?

This question should be addressed in two steps.

First, with so many types of water purifiers available on the market, which type is actually suitable for whole-house water purification?

Second, among these types, which brand of water purifier offers reliable quality and satisfactory after-sales service, ensuring a hassle-free experience?

If we break it down this way, the problem becomes much easier to solve.

Water purifiers are mainly categorized into two types: pre-filters and under-sink water filters.

A pre-filter is installed on the main water inlet pipe of a house.

Since it is designed for whole-house water purification, it must have a large flow rate. Otherwise, if multiple faucets are turned on at the same time, the water pressure will be insufficient.

For this reason, traditional pre-filters, such as those with steel meshes or PP stacked filters, have relatively low filtration precision, with a maximum of only 40 microns. If the precision were any higher, these filters would easily get clogged.

However, they have a critical drawback that is their low precision.

While they can maintain a sufficient flow rate, they can only trap large particles and are ineffective at filtering fine particles. Many users in rural areas, for example, use them to filter muddy water, but the outflow remains muddy.

With the emergence of water purifiers with higher filtration precision, such as PP cotton filters, micro-ultrafiltration (micro-UF) filters, and ultrafiltration (UF) filters, and the sales of traditional pre-filters have declined sharply.

PP cotton filters have a filtration precision ranging from 1 to 10 microns, which is higher than that of traditional pre-filters. They are also quite popular in the market currently. Nevertheless, they still suffer from low precision and cannot trap fine particles, bacteria, or viruses. As a result, their filter cartridges generally need to be replaced every 2 to 3 months.

If not replaced promptly, the PP cotton will become a breeding ground for bacteria, releasing contaminants back into the water supply.

Therefore, micro-ultrafiltration (micro-UF) or ultrafiltration (UF) filters are the most effective choices for whole-house water purification.

Micro-ultrafiltration (micro-UF) pre-filters, often referred to as "external-pressure membrane filters" by many users, have a filtration precision of 0.1 microns.

They can completely trap fine particles in water, such as sediment and rust. The filter element can be cleaned manually, which prevents it from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria, however, the need for manual cleaning is also its drawback.

Ultrafiltration (UF) filters, by contrast, have an even higher filtration precision of 0.01 microns.

They not only trap fine particles but also remove bacteria and viruses from water. This type of filter truly achieves whole-house water purification and avoids secondary contamination of the water pipeline.

Furthermore, UF filters can be designed as intelligent models that require no manual maintenance. Simply set the parameters, and the device will automatically clean the filter element at regular intervals.

Despite their high filtration precision, both micro-UF and UF membranes do not affect water flow rate. This is because increasing the membrane area can enhance the water production capacity.

Therefore, the optimal solution for whole-house water purification is either a micro-ultrafiltration or ultrafiltration system.
