As a professional ultrafiltration water filter factory, I would like to say that, municipal tap water is free from excessive heavy metal content, as water treatment plants conduct regular professional-grade water quality tests with up to 98~106 testing indicators, an assessment that is hardly achievable for individual consumers on their own.
Many people think a TDS meter alone can judge water quality, but in fact, a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) reading is just one of the more than 100 testing indicators used by water treatment plants. The value of this single indicator is far from sufficient to evaluate the overall quality of water.
More importantly, many people do not even understand that a TDS meter measures the total amount of dissolved solids in water. Choosing a water purifier with only a superficial understanding of water quality will inevitably lead to poor purchasing decisions.
While the 106-item testing ensures the safety and reliability of municipal tap water as daily drinking water, it does not mean the water is completely free of impurities.
The filtration processes at water treatment plants are designed to meet the safety standards for large-scale water supply, rather than the refined filtration tailored for household use. What’s more, tap water has to travel through long municipal water supply pipelines and community secondary water supply tanks before flowing into household water pipes.
During this process, problems such as aged and rusted pipelines and inadequate regular cleaning of community water tanks will inevitably cause tap water to mix with fine sediment, rust particles, and even some bacteria and other impurities. This is the core reason why water quality issues are more prominent in old residential communities with outdated pipelines.
Therefore, even when using municipal tap water, we recommend installing an ultrafiltration (UF) water purifier on the main water inlet pipeline of the entire household as the primary water filtration barrier. This not only prevents fine impurities, and even invisible pollutants, in tap water from causing secondary contamination to the whole-house water pipelines, but also effectively protects all water-related household appliances such as water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers, extending their service life.
For consumers with no budget constraints, we recommend ChengrongEra Smart Control Screen-Touch 0.01μm Ultrafiltration Water Filter, it not only eliminates the hassle of filter cartridge cleaning, our supporting electrical system but also enables fully automatic operation of the device.
Traditional whole house water filter have overly low filtration precision and fail to capture fine mud particles even invisible to the naked eye. Worse still, they may even become a secondary pollution source themselves after prolonged use. Yet the primary goal of whole-house water filtration system is precisely to intercept such fine mud, rust and other impurities.
For drinking needs, a combined solution of an ultrafiltration filter cartridge equipped with an activated carbon filter cartridge at the front end can produce mineral-retaining UF direct-drinking water, with excellent taste and quality.
Since municipal tap water itself has no excessive heavy metal content, the core difference between an ultrafiltration water purifier and an RO reverse osmosis water purifier lies in the fact that the former retains natural minerals and trace elements beneficial to the human body, while the latter traps all substances including minerals, leaving only water molecules, which is why we refer to RO water as pure water.
For areas with hard water and significant limescale buildup, an additional water softening module can be integrated into the whole-house water filtration system to enhance the water experience for bathing and laundry. Note: Softened water is not suitable for long-term drinking in fact.
Finally, it is important to clarify that whole-house water purification and whole-house water softening are two distinct concepts.
It is not feasible to apply RO reverse osmosis technology for whole-house water softening. Moreover, due to the ultra-high filtration precision of RO membranes, which trap minerals and trace elements in water, the concentrated water side of the membrane is prone to scaling when filtering hard water, which will affect the filtration flow rate of the RO membrane. For this reason, many RO reverse osmosis water purifiers inevitably add scale inhibitors to prolong the service life of filter cartridges.
You can’t have the best of both worlds, there are no perfect products, nor a one-size-fits-all water purifier that meets all needs. What consumers need to do is choose a water purifier with suitable performance based on their personal requirements.
