Yesterday, I received an inquiry from a netizen, one of the few customers who actually use ultrafiltration (UF) correctly. That’s why I’m writing this article to share some insights with you.
His setup, connecting the pure water outlet to a drinking faucet, and the blowdown outlet to a vegetable-washing faucet, follows the exact same logic as the dual-faucet design of our ChengrongEra mineral-water-like kitchen water purifier. The only difference is that his system uses a 100% ultrafiltration membrane, while ChengrongEra mineral-water-like water filter adopts a composite filter element.
This dual-faucet connection offers at least three key benefits:
- Every time you use water from the vegetable-washing faucet, it creates a forward flush on the inner wall of the internal pressure ultrafiltration membrane, washing away impurities adhering to it. This not only keeps the internal pressure membrane clean, but also extends the filter element’s service life by significantly reducing the fouling rate of the internal pressure membrane.
- Unlike water filtration systems connected to sewage pipes, UF water purifiers with this setup minimize the risk of bacterial overgrowth. Bacteria can only be intercepted or eliminated, not washed away by water. When a purifier is directly linked to sewage pipes, bacteria can easily spread into the unit through the piping.
- Municipal tap water in most regions is of above-average quality. By connecting the blowdown outlet to the vegetable-washing faucet, you can frequently flush the inner wall of the membrane to delay fouling while saving water resources. The water from the blowdown outlet is not really dirty, it’s perfectly suitable for washing vegetables, dishes, the table and so on.
Many people have misunderstandings about ultrafiltration membranes, claiming that internal pressure UF membranes are less practical than external pressure microfiltration membranes. Why? Because external pressure microfiltration membranes are tear-resistant and can be hand-washed, whereas internal pressure membranes are prone to fouling and may shrink if washed manually. As a result, some conclude that internal pressure membranes are inferior.
However, those who truly understand ultrafiltration always choose internal pressure membranes over external pressure ones.
Here’s the truth: External pressure membranes have a filtration precision of only 0.1 microns, making them suitable only for filtering turbid rural water to improve clarity. However, internal pressure membranes boast a filtration precision of 0.01 microns, capable of removing bacteria and viruses from raw water, producing water that meets mineral-water-like standards.
Additionally, internal pressure membranes are much easier to maintain. Proper backwashing and blowdown are all that’s needed, whereas external pressure membranes require regular manual removal and cleaning, a process that demands more effort and is relatively cumbersome for users.
Furthermore, internal pressure membranes leave no room for corner-cutting. Unlike external pressure membranes with liners, internal pressure membranes have no liners to use "tear resistance" as a misleading marketing gimmick. It’s important to note that tear resistance has nothing to do with the actual quality of an external pressure membrane itself.
Therefore, although internal pressure ultrafiltration membranes cannot be hand-washed, their backwashing and blowdown performance is excellent, making them far more convenient to maintain than external pressure membranes.
Finally, as the backbone manufacturer behind many global top-tier water purifier brands, Chengrong does not recommend using external pressure membranes for kitchen water purification.
