Yesterday, a friend asked me, what is the difference between the activated carbon fiber (ACF) used in ChengronEra mineral-like water purifier and traditional activated carbon (ACB)?

I  answered that activated carbon fiber has a higher cost, while traditional activated carbon offers a better cost-performance. That's why most water purifiers on the market use traditional activated carbon instead of activated carbon fiber. The activated carbon is cheaper.

The reason ChengrongEra chooses the more costly activated carbon fiber for its mineral-like water purifiers is that, we aim to benchmark against, or even surpass, international first-tier water purifier brands in manufacturing quality, product functionality, and structural design. Such cost-unrestrained investment is to live up to customers' trust.

Though Cheng Rong Times is still unknown to the public now, there is a saying that "Although the road is far, we will reach it if we walk." As long as we can provide water purifiers with TOP 1% quality, we will surely be known by more customers sooner or later.

Just like ChengRong Ultrafiltration Factory, which started as a small hardware processing workshop with less than 10 people. After 18 years, thanks to high-quality products and services, we have become TOP 3 in the stainless steel pipeline ultrafiltration industry, known to everyone in the sector.

Besides being more expensive than traditional activated carbon, what other advantages does activated carbon fiber have in performance? Next, let's introduce them in detail.

Both activated carbon fiber and traditional activated carbon are porous adsorbent materials, with the core function of adsorbing odors, discoloration, and residual chlorine in water. However, their differences are very obvious in structural form, adsorption performance, and application scenarios.

The raw materials of traditional activated carbon are mainly coconut shells, coal, or wood chips, and the production process is relatively simple. While the raw material of activated carbon fiber is organic fiber, which not only has a higher raw material cost but also a complex spinning process.

Traditional activated carbon is generally granular, cylindrical, or powdered, mainly composed of stacked carbon particles, with irregularly distributed internal pores. As the name suggests, activated carbon fiber is fibrous, with pores directly exposed on the fiber surface, evenly and densely distributed.

Moreover, the internal pores of traditional activated carbon include micropores, mesopores, and macropores, with very uneven pore sizes. In contrast, the pores on activated carbon fiber are mainly micropores with uniform sizes, and their adsorption capacity is mainly related to the number of micropores.

In terms of specific surface area, the specific surface area of activated carbon fiber can be tens or even hundreds of times that of traditional activated carbon. The activated carbon fiber used in ChengrongEra mineral-like water purifiers has a specific surface area 400 times that of ordinary granular carbon.

1) In terms of adsorption speed, activated carbon fiber is faster than traditional activated carbon.

Traditional activated carbon is like a pile of "carbon particles" put together, with not only different pore sizes but also messy distribution. Impurities such as odors and residual chlorine in water need to slowly penetrate from the particle surface to the internal pores. The speed of removing odors and residual chlorine is relatively slow, taking at least tens of seconds, or even more than ten seconds.

The adsorption speed of activated carbon fiber is 10~100 times that of ordinary activated carbon. Because activated carbon fiber has a larger specific surface area and adsorption sites exposed on the surface, it is like a "carbon non-woven fabric." When water passes through, impurities such as odors and residual chlorine in water can be captured by the adsorption micropores in just 1 second.

2) The proportion of micropores on traditional activated carbon is less, resulting in limited adsorption capacity. While the proportion of micropores on activated carbon fiber is as high as 80% or more, and the saturated adsorption capacity is 30%~50% higher than that of traditional activated carbon.

Due to the high proportion of macropores, traditional activated carbon can only adsorb obvious residual chlorine odor and sediment taste, and has almost no significant adsorption effect on trace pollutants in water such as pesticide residues, heavy metals (lead/mercury), and permanent chemicals (PFAS).

Activated carbon fiber can not only quickly remove residual chlorine and odors but also accurately adsorb trace organic matter, heavy metals, bacterial metabolites, etc., thus making the purified water meet direct drinking standards.

3) Traditional activated carbon is prone to powder shedding and has a short service life, while activated carbon fiber has good flexibility, no powder shedding, having a long service life.

Traditional activated carbon particles are prone to powder shedding due to friction. Long-term use may cause slight black impurities in the purified water. Moreover, the pores are easily saturated, requiring frequent filter replacement, resulting in high maintenance costs.

Activated carbon fiber has a stable fiber structure, uniform gaps, no risk of powder shedding, low water flow resistance, and fast water output. In addition, it has large adsorption capacity and strong anti-saturation ability, so its service life is 1~2 times longer than that of traditional activated carbon.

Why does ChengrongEra mineral-like water purifier use the more costly activated carbon fiber instead of the more cost-effective traditional activated carbon?

Because since the establishment of the ChengrongEra brand, I have told myself: It's not easy to build a brand, so we must never forgive ourselves for compromising on quality. Even if customers of ChengrongEra feel a little distressed when paying, I want to ensure that every subsequent use is pleasant, rather than the other way around, only feeling comfortable when paying, but never happy when using it.

It's hard to find another kitchen water purifier on the market that can not only remove bacteria, viruses, residual chlorine, and other particulate impurities in water to make the purified water meet direct drinking standards but also retain minerals and trace elements in water, except Cheng Rong Times' mineral-like water purifier.
