Natural water picks up a certain amount of soluble minerals as it flows through soil and rocks. This gives water properties like hardness, alkalinity, and salinity. Humans, however, have adapted to these natural characteristics of water through long-term evolution. Water without these properties feels unfamiliar to drink.
Since human society entered the industrial age, global water pollution and scarcity have become increasingly severe. Various water treatment technologies have thus developed accordingly, first water treatment plants, then water purifiers.
Traditional vs. Advanced Water Treatment
Traditional water purification methods such as coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection do not alter water’s natural properties. With technological progress, various advanced water treatment technologies have been developed. While effectively removing pollutants, these technologies also strip raw water of its minerals and trace elements.As a result, the TDS value of water treated by a water purifier decreases.
Limitations of TDS Testing
TDS value alone cannot indicate whether toxic heavy metals in water exceed safety limits.Toxic heavy metals have extremely low toxicity thresholds and are key monitoring targets for water treatment plants.
For example, China’s water quality standards specify the following limits for toxic heavy metals:
- Lead: 0.01 mg/L
- Arsenic: 0.01 mg/L
- Cadmium: 0.005 mg/L
- Hexavalent chromium: 0.05 mg/L
- Mercury: 0.0001 mg/L
- Selenium: 0.01 mg/L
- Thallium: 0.0001 mg/L
Even if all these toxic heavy metals exceed limits simultaneously, their combined contribution to TDS is barely more than 1 mg/L, yet their toxicity would already be significant.Additionally, TDS cannot reflect the pollution level of trace organic substances in water.
These substances, such as pesticide residues and disinfection by-products, have low concentrations but high potential toxicity. Their contribution to TDS is very small, but their harmful effects are substantial.
Safety of Tap Water
Fortunately, all the above substances are key testing items for water treatment plants. Tap water undergoes 106 tests before leaving the plant and can only be supplied to households if all indicators meet standards.Thus, tap water may not be perfectly clean, but it is definitely non-toxic.If tap water is found to have excessive heavy metals, it is a serious issue for which the water treatment plant must take responsibility. Due to this heavy liability, municipal tap water rarely has excessive heavy metals in normal circumstances.
The Real Threat to Drinking Water
For drinking water, the most dangerous pollutants are microorganisms, not heavy metal excess. Meeting heavy metal standards is a basic requirement for municipal tap water.Since everyone recognizes that excessive heavy metals are a severe problem, such cases are rare in real life. Instead, bacteria, viruses, and parasites in water pose the greatest threat to human health.
